PTA News

Friday 12 April

Spring’s upon us, and many exciting events are coming up, starting with our board elections at our April Association Meeting on Tuesday the 23rd of April, 6:30p in the School Library. As an incentive to have you come, we’re giving away archival Logowear to any member who attends (while supplies last).

And on May 11th, we’re having our Mustang Luau and Poker Tournament at the Long Beach Yacht Club. It’s a chance for us parents to let our proverbial hair down … and to take on Principal Chu in the poker tournament. Don’t be fooled by his cheery demeanor – principal Chu is a killer. We’ll also have a silent auction to go with our Luau. This year, the auction will be online a couple weeks before the luau, and anyone can bid on item, even if you’re not planning on attending the luau. We’re looking for donation items – anything from sports tickets to vacation home rentals to professional services, wine, etc. If you have something/someone you’d like to donate, please contact the Luau chairperson Melissa Luyben.

On the 21st of May, we’ll be having our career day – a chance for the kids to see what some of our parents’ professions, and possibly start the kids off on a career. Anyone who’d like to participate should contact Kathy Remaika.

It’s time to start thinking about the end of the year party we throw for the 8th graders. Check out the flyer here.

As for Dining for Dollars, we have a full slate of neighborhood partners who’re supporting the school. Check them out here.

The next Association Meeting is Tuesday April 23rd at 6:30 pm in the Rogers Middle School Library. Everyone who attends can receive a piece of a previous year’s logo-wear – perfectly good clothes that we don’t sell in the store anymore.

All voters must be members of the PTA in good standing for 30 days or more.

On Saturday May 11th, we’ll have our annual parent palooza, a.k.a. Mustang Luau & Poker Tournament at the Long Beach Yacht Club. We’ll have a full Hawaiin Spread for everyone, along with karaoke, photo booth, silent auction for all. The night is for poker players and non-players alike. Click here to purchase tickets

Dining for Dollars comes to California Pizza Kitchen on Wednesday 17 April. The next week, on Wednesday the 24th, we’ll return to 2nd Street favorite’s Poke Pola.

Friday 29 March

Spring Break is here! And Happy California Admissions day! In 1850, California became the 31st state to be admitted into the union … on September 9th. And while most of the state celebrates Admission Day on the 9th of September – the original date of admission – we celebrate it on Friday before Easter. This way, everyone’s happy. Happy Spring Break!!

Congratulations to Emmit Aquino, who won the school-wide Jeopardy tournament. The competition was fierce, a tribute to the strong scholars we have at Rogers Middle School. Here’s Emmit in the 7th Grade Finals:

On Saturday May 11th, we’ll have our Spring Fling and Poker Tournament at the Long Beach Yacht Club. Both players and non-players are invited – we’ll have a buffet spread of awesome Hawaiin-inspired food, music, karaoke, photo booth, Silent Auction, and – of course – the Poker Tournament. For newish poker players, we’ll have poker lessons before the tournament, so don’t feel overmatched – this game is all about fun (and no cash prizes). But there is a handsome winner’s trophy at stake, made by students from our own school.Mr. Chu nearly beat the whole field, and he’s gunning for the championship again this year.

Doors open at 5:30p, food served at 6p, poker lessons at 6:30, tournament starts at 7p. Tickets are available here.

We’re looking for donations to the silent auction. If you have anything you’d like to donate, including vacations houses, services, wine, or anything, really, please contact Melissa Luyben. She’s this year’s chairperson.

Friday 15 March

As a special Treat for Open House, we’ll have 2 food trucks there – Kona Ice & Taco Shore! You can pre-order a taco plate for $10 and agua fesca for $5 shortly (check back Friday night for link).

On May 11th, we’ll have our

  • Substance Abuse & Mental Health Workshop
  • Spring Music Concert
  • Dining for Dollars

Worried about your child’s access to social media? Concerned that there might be online dangers that await your loved ones? We are, too. This Tuesday, February 27th, we’ll have our next PTA General Association Meeting, and we’ll have our second in the Parent Workshop Series. This workshop will focus on Social Media and Internet Safety. We’ll meet in the Library at 6:30. Following the short PTA Meeting we’ll have the presentation.

The Jazz Band, Intermediate Band, and Orchestra will perform on Thursday 29th February, starting at 6:15 for the Jazz band. Participating musicians should arrive 30 minutes before their performances.

Friday 2 February

It’s the start of the new semester – the school year is more than half way done. And the days are getting longer. Maybe a few rainy days ahead of us, but the plants, at least, will be happy. Here are a few of the events coming up:

Friday 19 January

The PTA Association will meet on Tuesday, 23 January at 6:30, and we’ll have a special program immediately following the meeting – a workshop on High School Choice presented by Roger’s Rebecca Fast. Wondering where your student should attend high school? Rebecca will decode the different choices and programs at Long Beach High schools. We’ll have the meeting and workshop in the library, not the auditorium.

Dining for Dollars visits Naples Rib Company next Wednesday the 24th.
